breast size

Dear Jean:

Do your breasts get bigger from drinking milk?

Jean responds:

Hi,
Thanks for visiting at www.parentingadolescents.com, and for sending in a question.

Lots of teens and pre-teens wonder about whether breast size is related to drinking milk. I guess it's a natural question, given that one physical function of breasts is to provide milk for infants. However, no such luck--breast size is related to genetics, not to how much milk you drink.

You might want to confirm this, since I'm not a doctor or biologist, by going to one of the physical health sites we link to--check them out at our Related Sites page.

What I do know is that teens and pre-teens worry a lot about whether their bodies are normal and acceptable, whether they will grow to fit the "pictures" that the adolescent has in her/his mind of the way s/he would like to look. And what is true is that almost nobody ends up looking "perfect," by their own standards. I think you'll learn as you grow older that how you feel on the inside and how you interact with others will be much more important to your overall happiness than how closely your body fits any standard of "perfection."

Jean.
