DISCLAIMER

Read Terms and Conditions for use of this web site. You are bound by these Terms and Conditions as you use the information presented here.

The information contained on pages of this web site, Parenting Adolescents, is intended to be educational. Ms. Martin and Ms. Walbridge give advice about typical problems encountered in parenting adolescents. However, it is not possible to predict or guarantee the results of applying any particular piece of advice in a specific situation. Neither Ms. Martin nor Ms. Walbridge nor Youth & Family Counseling accepts liability for negative results incurred by following the advice given herein. Ms. Walbridge's or Ms. Martin's responses to questions from teens or parents are not a substitute for face-to-face consultation or psychotherapy with a mental health professional.

Parents who are seriously concerned and/or are having difficulty understanding or dealing with an adolescent child should consult a qualified mental health professional, in person. Teens or pre-teens who are seriously concerned about their lives or mental health should, likewise, consult a qualified mental health professional in person. [See the Counseling page on this site for more discussion of when to get help for your teen or pre-teen, and you may also refer to the Directory of Clinicians for names of qualified professionals in your community. See About Getting Help for information about various mental health disciplines and the differences between them.]

Minors (teens, pre-teens) or parents seeking immediate help or advice should consult a professional with whom they can speak in person--a physician, psychiatrist, social worker, psychologist, school counselor, or other health professional who can listen and provide immediate feedback and assistance in managing immediate, urgent problems. Needs for immediate help or advice are not best met through e-mail. [You may consult the Directory of Clinicians, or call a family services agency in your community.]

Persons needing immediate help may also make use of hotlines in their community; we suggest calling the telephone directory service in your area for telephone numbers of hotlines in your community set up to offer immediate assistance or advice.

IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT SUICIDE OR FEEL THAT YOU MAY BE A DANGER TO YOURSELF OR TO OTHERS, PLEASE IMMEDIATELY CALL 911 AND NOTIFY THE POLICE OR EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES.

Most communities in the United States have sliding-fee-scale agencies and/or private practitioners qualified to advise parents about their children and/or to work directly with adolescents. Youth and Family Counseling's telephone number is 847-367-5991. The agency has its own web site, at http://www.yfc-libertyville.com .

Therapy with Ms. Martin or Ms. Walbridge is available by appointment only. Ms. Martin's telephone number is 847-432-2170. Ms. Walbridge's number is 847-926-8328. Callers may leave a confidential voicemail message at these numbers.
