INFO SENT BY ADOLESCENT TO PARENTING
ADOLESCENTS RE HELL'S BELLS:
I just ran across a Q &
A on the drug "hells bells". Someone asked you what
it was and you didnt know. Well i know what it is because my
best friend almost died from it. It is made from the root of
a Yellow Trumpet Flower. You boil the root and then drink it.
Most people mix it with gatorade. It is much more dangerous
than people think. As i said, my best friend took it and he would
have died had i not showed up and forced his loser/stoned friends
to let me take him to the hospital. The doctors told me he wouldnt
have made it if i had taken him minutes later than when i did.
Hells Bells makes you halucinate, seize, convulse... my friend
was experiencing all of the above. He was stiff and moaning.
His eyes would open occasionally but he would not respond to
us- almost like he didnt see us, but we'll never know because
he doesnt remember any of it. He halucinated all night in the
hospital. Even the doctors and nurses had never heard of "hells
bells". In fact, they were yahoo searching it as i sat
next to them in the ER. The morning shift nurse knew about it
and an antidote, thankfully, she gave it to him around 8am and
the halucinations began to dwindle. He had halucinated for over
9 hours. Most teens i talk to about it dont believe that. They
think it can be worn off in an hour or two. Some say, drink
lots of water while others say no, thats the worst thing you
can do. Fact is, they have no idea what they are dealing with.
Afterwards, the next day the drug was still in his system and
he was still halucinating a little even when they released him.
It wasnt until 4 days after he returned home did he begin to
regain his short term memory. This is also an affect of hells
bells; memory loss, along with temporary blindness in some cases.
And in the case of seizures and halucinations, possible brain
damage. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS DRUG. PLEASE TELL YOUR KIDS.
If they dont believe you, tell them they can email me. I'm
17, i go to highschool, i know we think we're unbreakable. Well
my experience, sitting next to my best friend convulsing and
halucinating strapped down to a hospital bed because he kept
tearing out his IV in his combative state, is NOT one that leaves
me in one peice. I wish i could say the same for those "friends"
of ours who i had to BEG to take him to the hospital. They are
still invinceable. Now they just ignore us because we wont do
drugs with them. Its suprising and sad, but slowly yet surely,
they BECOME their addiction. Their stoner mantality is not who
they are under that, but it is who they are now, at this point
in their lives, and hopefully they will come to eventually.
But tell your kids they cant always hang around and wait for
their friends to become the people they used to be without the
drugs. Its too easy to fall into it with them. because they become
selfish and only want to hang out with you anyways if youre going
in on the drugs with them, etc. Please watch your kids, and
if you see it, dont just let it happen and pretend its not. do
something about it.
Jean responds:
Hi,
Thanks for writing to parentingadolescents.com.
I am so sorry for your loss.
You must be in shock and grief. Good for you for trying to understand
what happened to your friend.
At the Office
of National Drug Policy's web site giving street names for
various drugs, I find nothing specifically called "hells
bells," but I do find "hell" referring to cocaine,
and "hell dust" referring to heroin.* (*But see informative
adolescent's response on this drug, above.)
As you may know, you can snort, smoke, or inject either of these
drugs and a great many more. For further information on what
your friend may have died from, you can write to Dr. Wilkie Wilson,
one of the authors of Buzzed,
a book of scientific findings about the effects of many drugs.
Go to: www.parentingteens.com/askwilkiearchive.shtml
You can ask Dr. Wilson any
of your other questions about drugs as well and get an email
answer. Your school nurse is another source from whom you can
ask for information about what these drugs are and what they
can do to you, as is Dr.
Wilson's book.
In the meantime, I hope you
will try to find an adult you respect and trust that you can
talk to about your friend and his death to help you deal with
your own feelings and sort through whatever issues you may have
about it and about your own relationship to drugs.
Hope this helps a little. God
be with you.
Jean.
