Interpreting
the chart:
Main finding:
When parents were asked to vote for the 'top 3' areas they were
happiest with in their relationships with their teens/preteens,
"discussions we have" was the one most voted
for, on average. "Excitement at seeing development toward
adulthood" and "achievements by teen/preteen"
came in as the second and third most popular areas, so these
are the TOP 3 AREAS OF APPRECIATION in the parent-teen/
parent-preteen relationship for parents responding to this poll.
"Morals demonstrated
by teen/preteen"
came in fourth.
(See the list
of all the areas parents could select from.)
This past quarter is the first
time that Parenting Adolescents has offered a poll of areas of
relationship with teens/preteens appreciated by their parents,
so there are no "prior quarter" results to compare
with!
See the results of the "Issues in Parenting" poll--the
issues parents choose as their 'top 3' in parenting their teens/preteens.

POLL.
Interpreting the colored
bars:
All Respondents:
this bar shows what proportion of the total number of votes cast
by poll respondents went to a particular area as one of the "top
3" areas of appreciation in the parent-teen/parent-preteen
relationship
*votes by parents of GIRLS:
this bar shows what proportion of the total number of votes cast
by parents of girls went to a particular area (as one
of the "top 3" areas of appreciation in the parent-teen/parent-preteen
relationship)
*votes by parents of BOYS:
this bar shows what proportion of the total number of votes cast
by parents of boys went to a particular area (as one of
the "top 3" areas of appreciation in the parent-teen/parent-preteen
relationship)
votes by parents of PRETEENS:
this bar shows what proportion of the total number of votes cast
by parents of PRETEENS went to a particular area (as one
of the "top 3" areas of appreciation in the parent-preteen
relationship)
votes by parents of TEENS:
this bar shows what proportion of the total number of votes cast
by parents of teens went to a particular area (as one
of the "top 3" areas of appreciation in the parent-teen
relationship)
Gender and Teen/Preteen
Differences:
The chart shows
that votes by *parents of girls and the overall average
for all respondents are pretty much the same across all the
leading areas of appreciation.
*Parents of boys and parents of girls showed
some differences across the first three areas: "discussions,"
"excitement at seeing development toward adulthood,"
and "achievements," with parents of boys consistently
more appreciative of these areas, proportionally, than parents
of girls. [However, gender differences in this poll need
to be taken with 'a grain of salt,' since for a month the poll
form at this web site allowed parents only to indicate that their
teen/preteen was a girl. Estimates of numbers of girl/boy votes
were therefore adjusted but represent only approximations to
what might have been the actual votes cast by parents in each
category, had there not been this 'glitch' in the system.]
Parents of teens and parents of preteens
also cast somewhat significantly
different votes, proportionally, in the areas called "excitement
at seeing development toward adulthood" and "moral
development." It is perhaps not surprising that parents
of more teens than preteens indicated these as areas of
appreciation in their relationships, as the teens would have
progressed further in these areas by virtue of relative age.
